In Ottawa, two current city council members are set to retain their positions as no challengers emerged before the recent deadline. Riley Brockington in River ward and David Brown in Rideau-Jock are the sole candidates in their respective wards, ensuring their automatic re-election pending final certification by the city clerk.
City clerk Caitlin Salter MacDonald aims to finalize the nominations by the end of the day, noting that this would be the first time a council candidate wins uncontested since 2003. While voters in these wards can still participate in other elections like for mayor, their ballots will reflect the uncontested status.
Expressing gratitude, Brown stated, “I’m humbled and deeply honored by the opportunity to continue serving the residents of Ward 21.” He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling community priorities and earning trust.
Initially unopposed, Isabelle Skalski of Osgoode and Laine Johnson of College ward faced last-minute competition as candidates filed nominations. Pending confirmation, Bruce Faulkner and Abakar Malloum emerged as challengers in Osgoode and College ward, respectively.
A total of 85 candidates are now vying for council seats, slightly fewer than the 107 in the previous election, with most incumbents seeking re-election. In the mayoral race, 14 candidates, including long-time contender Bernard Couchman and newcomers like Ali Shayvard and Jacob Solomon, have joined the fray.
Noteworthy endorsements are already emerging, with incumbent Mayor Mark Sutcliffe securing support from various prominent figures. The electoral landscape is taking shape, with candidates outlining policy stances on key issues such as transit, housing, and transparency.
As the election day nears on October 26, voters will have opportunities for early voting and special mail-in ballots. The political scene in Ottawa is heating up, with a mix of familiar faces and fresh contenders vying for council and mayoral positions.
