“Canada Halts Talks with U.S. Over Unacceptable Demands”

Prime Minister Mark Carney instructed his negotiators to halt discussions following the last-minute introduction of unacceptable demands by the Trump administration on cultural, automotive, and sovereignty issues. Carney criticized the U.S.’s lack of interest in a genuine economic partnership with Canada, emphasizing that the American demands were imbalanced and inadequate.

Carney expressed Canada’s firm stance against the U.S.’s requests, citing concerns over subsidies for French culture, online French-language media, and bilingual labeling regulations. He highlighted the U.S.’s attempts to unfairly treat Canadian-made auto parts and impose restrictions that would undermine Canada’s sovereignty.

The prime minister accused the U.S. of disrupting months of negotiations by introducing unreasonable demands at the eleventh hour, leading to the breakdown of talks. He announced the implementation of 50% tariffs on Canadian products in response to the failed negotiations, with reciprocal tariffs on U.S. goods scheduled by the following Tuesday.

Carney criticized the lack of unity within the Trump administration compared to Canada’s cohesive negotiation team. He emphasized Canada’s awareness of the U.S.’s shifting trade policies and use of tariffs as a weapon, resulting in a strained relationship between the two countries. Carney underscored the importance of standing by trade agreements and criticized the U.S.’s inconsistent rationale for imposing tariffs on Canadian goods.

Economist Trevor Tombe warned of potential job losses in Canada due to the imposed tariffs, estimating that nearly 90,000 jobs could be at risk across various provinces, with significant impacts on the job market. The federal Liberal government projected job losses and economic repercussions from the tariffs on Canadian exports.
