Toronto City Councillor Paula Fletcher Announces Retirement

Toronto City Councillor Paula Fletcher has announced her retirement from city hall and confirmed that she will not be running for re-election in the upcoming October municipal election. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Fletcher revealed that her decision to retire came after a reflective morning paddle boarding on Lake Ontario. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the diverse communities of Toronto-Danforth over the past 23 years and emphasized the importance of passing the torch to the next generation.

Fletcher’s decision to step down was influenced by her contemplation of the city’s evolving landscape, including the revitalization of the waterfront and ongoing projects such as the restoration of the Don River. Reflecting on her tenure, she paid tribute to her late colleagues and highlighted key achievements, such as the development of Biidaasige Park and the initiation of a new housing project at Danforth and Greenwood Avenues that will offer 70 affordable and rental-controlled apartments, as well as a permanent home for Le Théâtre français de Toronto.

While acknowledging the encouragement from many to seek re-election and recognizing the unfinished work in the community, Fletcher expressed pride in her accomplishments and the positive impact she has had on Toronto-Danforth. She concluded her announcement by stating that it is time for a new chapter, both for the community and herself.
