“Team Labrador Formed to Maximize Benefits of Energy Agreement”

The government of Newfoundland and Labrador aims to ensure that residents of Labrador reap the rewards of the province’s multibillion-dollar energy agreement with Quebec. To oversee the potential benefits for the region, a team comprising three provincial legislators has been established. Minister of Labrador Affairs Lela Evans heads the team, with Progressive Conservative MHAs Joe Power and Keith Russell also on board.

Both provinces’ public utility entities have put forth plans for numerous energy initiatives along the Churchill River. However, a local mayor has expressed concerns about the community’s ability to accommodate the influx of workers expected for these projects. Mayor Bert Pomeroy of Happy Valley-Goose Bay highlighted potential strains on housing, healthcare, and related infrastructure.

The newly formed Team Labrador will collaborate with Indigenous groups, municipalities, community leaders, businesses, and other stakeholders across Labrador. Russell emphasized that significant developments along the Churchill River will have far-reaching effects, particularly in central Labrador communities. Engaging early with stakeholders and responding to their needs and opportunities are deemed crucial.

In a separate development, a Liberal MHA from Labrador questioned the composition of Team Labrador, noting the absence of representation from the Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair district. Lisa Dempster raised queries about how the team plans to utilize feedback from Labradorians and whether it possesses the authority to act on such feedback effectively.

The team’s efforts will also contribute to shaping the province’s northern strategy, ensuring that the interests and concerns of Labrador’s communities are duly considered and addressed.
