Environment Canada has issued a special weather alert for heavy rainfall anticipated in the Greater Toronto Area, Peel, and Durham regions over the upcoming weekend. The national meteorological agency warned that localized rainfall totals could surpass 50 millimetres, starting Saturday morning and persisting into early Sunday.
According to Environment Canada, showers and thunderstorms are set to form in southwestern Ontario on Saturday morning and then progress into the Greater Golden Horseshoe later in the day. On Sunday, additional showers are predicted for areas east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
The slow-moving nature of the showers and thunderstorms may result in certain areas experiencing multiple rounds of precipitation, although rainfall levels could fluctuate throughout the region. Environment Canada mentioned that there is uncertainty regarding the precise locations that will receive the most significant amount of rainfall.
Residents are advised to steer clear of low-lying regions and remain cautious of potential washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. It is crucial not to navigate through flooded roads, as water accumulation is expected in low-lying areas.
