“Niagara Region Braces for Weekend Storms & Flash Flood Risk”

The Niagara region is expected to experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and a potential flash flood warning over the upcoming weekend. The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) has issued this warning for areas in southeast Hamilton and east of Haldimand, Ont. According to the NPCA, approximately 40 to 60 millimetres of rainfall is forecasted to start on Saturday, with showers predicted for late morning and early afternoon as per Environment Canada. Thunderstorms are also anticipated from afternoon to evening in the Niagara region, with a possibility of thunderstorms in Hamilton and Haldimand starting earlier in the late morning and continuing into the evening, potentially extending overnight. The NPCA mentioned that these thunderstorms could bring an additional 15 to 25 mm of rainfall in affected regions. Showers are expected on Sunday for the Niagara region, Hamilton, and Haldimand County.

The conservation authority has cautioned about potential flash flooding along small and urbanized watercourses, rapid water level increases, and flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas due to the forecast. However, it does not foresee major flooding near larger watercourses. Residents in Niagara are advised to avoid creeks, rivers, and areas where water levels may rise swiftly or become slippery and unstable. The NPCA recommends keeping children and pets away from water bodies and suggests property owners clear debris from culverts, catch basins, and ditches. Residents can stay updated on the region’s flood status on the NPCA’s website.

This warning follows recent flooding in Niagara caused by a rare weather phenomenon, which resulted from multiple storms hitting the area on July 21, July 27, July 28, and August 2.
