Flight attendants and pilots face the highest risk of radiation-related cancers, surpassing individuals working directly with radioactive materials, a recent study reveals. Cosmic radiation originating from space, though limited on Earth’s surface, poses a heightened exposure risk to those operating at high altitudes.
Previous studies hinted at increased cancer death rates among frequent flyers, particularly pilots and flight attendants, due to cosmic ionizing radiation at cruising altitude, UV-A radiation penetrating cockpit windows, and circadian rhythm disruptions. The new research, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, analyzed over 12 million death certificates, indicating professions with elevated radiation-linked cancer death rates, such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and skin, breast, thyroid, prostate, and central nervous system cancers.
Flight attendants exhibited the highest percentage of radiation-related cancer deaths among over 500 occupations, followed by pilots. Notably, neither group displayed elevated non-radiation-related cancer death rates, suggesting occupational radiation exposure as the primary factor. The study also dispelled the assumption that flight crew’s skin cancer risks stem from sunny layovers, highlighting cockpit environments as significant exposure sites.
Flight attendants had a 50% higher probability of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general workforce, while pilots had a 36% higher likelihood. Despite study limitations, such as unknown exposure levels and potential occupation misclassification on death certificates, the research underscored the challenge of discerning various overlapping exposures.
Additional factors like circadian disruption and lack of federal dose limits for aircrews’ radiation exposure raise concerns. Recommendations include heightened cancer vigilance through regular skin checks and early mammograms for female crew members. Enhanced awareness and monitoring of radiation risks among flight personnel are imperative for ensuring occupational safety.
