“Rez Cops Comedy Series Debuts at Indigenous Arts Festival”

Kettle Point Productions is set to debut their comedy series, Rez Cops, this Saturday at Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. The six-episode show, conceived three years ago, aims to bring laughter and shed light on unique stories seldom portrayed on screen.

Christina Clark from Kettle Point Productions expressed, “We have compelling and humorous tales to share.” Leigh George, the writer and director of Rez Cops, described the series as following an enthusiastic new police recruit finding himself in his hometown precinct, seeking adventure but encountering a tranquil environment instead.

The inaugural public screening of Rez Cops will take place at the Night Sky Theatre Indigenous Arts Festival on August 22 at the Kettle and Stony Point Pow Wow grounds. The event will feature food vendors, a round dance, and musical performances.

George emphasized the show’s focus on showcasing positivity and creating a crime-free portrayal of life on the reserve. He highlighted that the characters in Rez Cops navigate interpersonal dynamics rather than criminal activities, aiming to bring laughter and healing through comedy.

Acknowledging the importance of portraying Indigenous resilience and humor, Clark mentioned collaborating with the Anishinabek Police Service to ensure the series did not mock law enforcement. The duo emphasized the community’s support in making the project a reality, with contributions ranging from financial aid to volunteer assistance.

The festivities will kick off at 6:30 p.m., with free admission to the screening of the six 10-minute episodes starting at 9 p.m. This event not only marks the show’s premiere but also serves as a tribute to the community’s backing and involvement in bringing Rez Cops to life.
