“Legal Twist: Charges Dropped in Teen Shooting Case”

In late June, Montreal police charged 11 young individuals after investigating the events leading to a police officer fatally shooting a teenager in the South Shore area. The Quebec Crown prosecutor’s office recently halted proceedings against the 11 accused, citing the discovery of new evidence that raised complex legal issues.

The youths were facing various charges, including conspiracy to kidnap, conspiracy to commit assault, wearing a disguise for criminal purposes, possession of a dangerous weapon, unlawful assembly, and failure to comply with court orders. While this development doesn’t mark the end of the case, the Crown has up to a year to resume proceedings after filing the stay.

This case is part of multiple investigations that followed the tragic shooting of 15-year-old Nooran Rezayi in September 2025. The BEI, Quebec’s police watchdog, conducted an inquiry into the shooting and forwarded its findings to the Crown prosecutor’s office (DPCP). The decision on whether the police officer responsible for the shooting will face charges is still pending.

Another investigation, initiated by Quebec’s Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière in early June, is ongoing to determine if Longueuil police adhered to proper procedures in notifying the BEI about the incident. The watchdog was informed about the shooting an hour and 36 minutes after it occurred.

Rezayi lost his life mere seconds after the police arrived at the scene in response to a 911 call reporting masked and armed individuals, despite being unarmed himself. In December 2025, the teenager’s family filed a $2.2 million lawsuit against the City of Longueuil and its police department.
