“Progress Made in Fighting Alaska’s Mukluk Wildfire”

A wildfire in close proximity to Tok, Alaska, has been partially brought under control as confirmed by state wildfire authorities on Wednesday. Despite this progress, ongoing efforts are in place to safeguard the community following the loss of several structures to the fire earlier in the week. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy has declared a state of disaster for the area, which automatically activates funding for repairing public infrastructure and aiding individuals impacted by the fire.

The Mukluk fire, estimated to cover approximately 2,000 hectares, is currently ablaze roughly 100 kilometers away from the Yukon border. According to the latest briefing from the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection on Wednesday, containment measures have reached 16%, with a secured perimeter established around the Tok community.

A total of 167 personnel are actively engaged in firefighting efforts, with evacuations still enforced in certain parts of Tok, a community with a population of around 1,500 residents. Karen Webster from Anchorage shared her experience of arriving in Tok on Monday evening with a group of Belgian motorcyclists, only to discover the community sparsely populated.

During a community assembly in Tok on Tuesday, residents were informed that additional firefighting teams and aircraft were being dispatched from the Yukon to assist. Yukon’s Department of Community Services informed CBC News that four crews, a division supervisor, and an agency representative are en route to the affected area.

The weather forecast for Tok indicates a drop in temperatures and a likelihood of showers in the upcoming days, with the potential for thunderstorms on Friday night.
