RCMP in Manitoba have confirmed that the human remains discovered in Umpherville this week belong to a newly born infant or fetus. The authorities were alerted about the potential remains outside in the northern community, close to The Pas, on Monday morning. The remains were located between two residences, as per a news release issued by the RCMP on Wednesday.
Following the discovery, an autopsy was conducted on Wednesday, and the RCMP’s investigation is ongoing. Elder Edwin Jebb of Opaskwayak Cree Nation mentioned that a sacred fire has been ignited at the site where the remains were found. He also shared that a vigil was held with 80 individuals present, exceeding the expected turnout of 60, which had a profound impact on the community members.
Jebb expressed that the incident has been distressing for everyone in the community, but people are supporting each other in various positive ways. The RCMP have urged anyone with relevant information to contact The Pas RCMP at 204-627-6204.
