Three beaches in the Niagara area have been identified as unsafe for swimming due to high levels of E. coli, as per the latest beach water test results from the Niagara Region. In addition, Grimsby’s Nelles Beach has been marked as unsafe for swimming and is currently closed. The decision not to test Nelles for E. coli was made for safety reasons.
E. coli is a bacterium that can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, particularly affecting vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
The following Niagara beaches are deemed unsafe for swimming:
– Lakeside Beach in St. Catharines
– Sunset Beach in St. Catharines
– Sherkston Elco in Port Colborne
– Nelles Beach in Grimsby (closed)
Despite being considered unsuitable for swimming, the beaches in St. Catharines remain open for activities like sunbathing and building sandcastles. Concerning the safety of Grimsby’s Nelles Beach, potential issues include floating debris, oil, excessive weed growth, unpleasant odors, and water cloudiness.
Niagara Region noted that E. coli test results may not always be completely accurate and can vary based on factors like the number of swimmers or birds present, wind and wave conditions, water clarity, and recent heavy rainfall.
Officials emphasized the importance of avoiding ingesting beach water, washing hands before eating, and being cautious when entering the water. They recommended checking current water quality reports and assessing environmental conditions before swimming. If conditions seem unfavorable, it is advised to enjoy the beach from the shore.
In contrast, several beaches in the region are considered safe for swimming. These include Fort Erie (Bay Beach, Bernard Avenue Beach, Crescent Beach, Waverly Beach), Grimsby (Casablanca Beach, Fifty Point Conservation Beach), Lincoln (Charles Daley Park), Niagara-on-the-Lake (Queen’s Royal Beach), Port Colborne (Centennial Cedar Bay Beach, Nickel Beach, Sherkston Quarry Beach, Sherkston Wyldewood Beach), and Wainfleet (Long Beach, Reebs Bay, Wainfleet Lake Erie Public Access Beach).
