Environment Canada has issued a weather alert indicating the potential for severe thunderstorms in eastern Alberta that could lead to the formation of a tornado. The agency warned that funnel clouds in the area may descend to the ground and transform into brief landspout tornadoes. Reports have indicated that these funnel clouds in eastern Alberta are approaching ground level, heightening the risk. The alert stated that the threat of landspout tornadoes will persist until early evening.
In the event of a tornado or a tornado warning, Environment Canada advised taking shelter indoors in a room on the lowest floor, away from windows and exterior walls. Suitable locations include basements, bathrooms, stairwells, or interior closets. Individuals should avoid mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers, and seek refuge in sturdy buildings. As a last resort, lying in a low-lying area while protecting the head from airborne debris is recommended.
Additionally, Environment Canada issued a separate weather statement warning of possible funnel clouds in central and northern Alberta, with a chance of weak landspout tornado formation. These funnel clouds are typically a result of minor rotation beneath rapidly forming clouds or weak thunderstorms. Residents were urged to treat any sighting of funnel clouds seriously and prepare for potential shelter as these formations can appear suddenly.
While the weak rotation associated with funnel clouds is usually not hazardous near the ground, there is a possibility of intensification leading to weak landspout tornadoes. Although landspout tornadoes generally do not cause significant damage, they can still pose dangers such as toppling trees, roof damage, and debris displacement over short distances. The weather conditions conducive to funnel cloud development in central and northern Alberta are expected to persist until evening, with the possibility of watches and warnings being issued if the risk escalates.
