Diesel Prices Soar in Canada Amid Global Conflicts

With the surge in diesel costs driven by ongoing global conflicts, the expenses of refueling trucks that transport goods across Canada have reached unprecedented levels, as per industry experts. Tej Dulat, from the Canada Truck Operators Association, highlighted the significant impact on commercial trucking operations due to the soaring fuel prices. The regular consumption of hundreds of liters of fuel per week places a substantial financial burden on trucking companies, especially since the spike in prices following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The current diesel prices across Canada have escalated to $2.62 per liter, exceeding last week’s peak of $2.52, and marking a substantial increase compared to the previous year. In specific regions like Vancouver, the price reached $2.92 per liter, reflecting the widespread impact of the price surge.

Experts emphasize that geopolitical conflicts, rather than tariffs, are currently the primary drivers of the oil price surge, with the ongoing U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran playing a pivotal role. The shortage of diesel supply has been exacerbated by reduced exports from the Persian Gulf region and Russia’s ban on diesel exports following damage to Ukrainian refineries.

To alleviate some of the financial strain, the federal government has extended the suspension of the federal fuel excise tax until January 2027. However, industry analysts warn that this measure may not be sufficient to offset the escalating costs faced by trucking companies and consumers.

As diesel prices historically tend to rise further during winter, energy analyst Dan McTeague anticipates a challenging season ahead for various industries reliant on diesel, including transportation and aviation. The ripple effects of the price increase are expected to impact the entire food supply chain, potentially leading to elevated food prices and economic challenges for low-income Canadians in the foreseeable future.
