“Community Living London Strike Resolved After Nearly 3 Months”

Community Living London and OPSEU Local 166 have reached a resolution, putting an end to a strike that lasted nearly three months, during which numerous community and social workers went on strike in late May.

In a statement released on Thursday, Community Living London expressed optimism about the way forward, emphasizing a spirit of reconciliation and renewed vigor. The organization highlighted its dedication to the individuals they assist, their families, and the staff members who enable the provision of care. They expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the community.

Among the union’s requests were retroactive payments connected to Bill 124, which limited wage hikes in the public sector to one percent before being deemed unconstitutional. Additionally, they sought increased funding, citing a significant backlog of individuals in need of support as evidence of a struggling sector.

Lisa Fewster, the president of the union, acknowledged that the underlying issue lay with the provincial government, which supplies the funding for Community Living London. Fewster emphasized that the government needed to take responsibility for the challenges faced by those requiring support.

While CBC News sought details on the specifics of the agreement from the union without success, Community Living London confirmed that they would provide updates on the resumption of full services.

The strike’s conclusion brought immense relief to Carla Dew and her 25-year-old son Mitchell, who has autism and Tourette syndrome and relies on structured support. Mitchell’s routine was disrupted by the strike, prompting Dew to take on full-time care responsibilities. Despite her efforts, Dew recognized the irreplaceable role that Community Living London played in Mitchell’s life, providing him with essential routines and community engagement activities.

Dew’s experience during the strike reinforced her appreciation for the workers at Community Living London, whom she deemed indispensable for individuals with disabilities and their families. She expressed gratitude for their advocacy and stressed the importance of fair compensation for their vital contributions.
