“Canadian PM Mark Carney to Strengthen EU Ties in Strasbourg”

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to deliver a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, next month, as confirmed by his office on Wednesday. During his visit, Carney will engage with members of the European Parliament to enhance the relationship between Canada and the European Union for the mutual benefit of both parties.

Prior to his speech, Carney will also attend the State of the European Union address, an annual event featuring a key speech by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, which is considered a significant political gathering in Europe.

The visit comes at a crucial time as Canada seeks to strengthen its ties with Europe amidst an ongoing trade conflict with the United States. Following the breakdown of trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington over the weekend, Carney’s visit underscores the importance of fostering relationships with European partners.

In the past year, Canada has inked several new partnership agreements with the EU and became the first non-European nation to join Security Action for Europe, which offers substantial loans for defense expenditures.

A spokesperson for the European Commission emphasized the significance of Carney’s visit in demonstrating the close bond between Canada and the EU. The spokesperson highlighted that the visit aims to signify the commitment of both sides to elevate their partnership, especially during challenging times that necessitate strengthening global relationships.

While the visit has garnered positive attention, Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman raised concerns, questioning the timing of Carney’s address to the EU Parliament and suggesting that he should prioritize recalling Parliament before engaging with another legislative body.
