The film, titled “Tony,” is a biopic focusing on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s iconic status, Johnson expressed ease in sharing his story, mentioning his detachment from Bourdain’s persona and reputation initially.
Johnson revealed that he had no plans to make a film about Bourdain until he encountered actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. The director and actor bonded over shared perspectives on various issues, leading them to collaborate on exploring these themes in the film.
The script for “Tony” draws inspiration from Bourdain’s early life as depicted in his book “Kitchen Confidential,” focusing on a summer in Provincetown, Mass., where Bourdain worked as a chef for the first time. By concentrating on the young Tony, the film aims to sidestep the pressure of portraying the older, established Bourdain, whom many fans idolize.
Johnson emphasized that the narrative delves into the complexities of Bourdain’s youth, including his relationships with family and peers, and his transition into adulthood. By avoiding the portrayal of Bourdain as a saint and instead showcasing his vulnerabilities and growth, the film aims to resonate with audiences who admire him.
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on Friday, August 14, offering viewers a fresh perspective on the formative years of the culinary icon.
