Curtis Dagenais, the individual who committed a crime against two Saskatchewan RCMP officers twenty years ago, will soon be back in court in Saskatoon over a legal dispute regarding his truck. The 1986 blue GMC 1500, which remains stored at RCMP headquarters in Regina, is the subject of a forfeiture application by the Crown for its destruction. Dagenais opposes this action.
On July 6, 2006, Dagenais was in his truck in Spiritwood when three RCMP constables attempted to arrest him. A chase ensued, during which Dagenais shot and killed two officers, Marc Bourdages and Robin Cameron, and injured another officer, Michelle Knopp. Dagenais was later convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, receiving life sentences without parole for 25 years.
The Crown is now seeking the truck’s forfeiture for destruction, a process that was initially overlooked but brought to court by prosecutor Scott Bartlett in 2021. Dagenais opposes the truck’s destruction, claiming the bullet holes within it could support his innocence. He reached out to Innocence Canada for assistance, with the court granting him more time to pursue this avenue.
In a recent hearing, Justice Daryl Labach allowed Dagenais another adjournment to seek legal representation to contest the forfeiture application. The hearing is scheduled for August 31.
