The mayor of The Pas has stepped down from his position shortly before the upcoming local election and has also decided not to seek re-election this fall. Andre Murphy, who was initially elected as the mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, made the announcement online on Monday night, stating that he was resigning with immediate effect.
Confirming his resignation to CBC News, Murphy clarified that he has officially resigned as mayor and will not be participating in the re-election process scheduled for October 28, leaving The Pas without a mayor for the next nine weeks. There will be no mayoral byelection held before the upcoming election day. Deputy mayor Carrie Atkinson will be taking over the majority of Murphy’s daily responsibilities until the election.
Murphy disclosed that he and his family reached the decision the previous week and officially informed the council on Monday. Although contemplating running for another four-year term, he had a change of heart over the summer and opted not to pursue re-election.
Expressing his commitment to community service, Murphy emphasized, “Once I commit to something, I’m all in. I couldn’t just step away slowly from the responsibility of representing the community for another four years.” He added that the decision to step down was made after careful consideration with his family, concluding that it was the right time to make the transition.
In light of his resignation, Murphy expressed his desire to spend more quality time with his family, particularly his children and grandchildren residing in eastern Canada. He emphasized his long-standing connection to The Pas, where he has lived for over 50 years, referring to the community members as his extended family.
Reflecting on his tenure as mayor, Murphy highlighted his achievements in fostering closer ties with neighboring communities and government bodies, addressing local challenges behind the scenes, and securing substantial grants for recreational and infrastructural projects. He expressed confidence in the town’s council and administration to continue the community’s progress.
Murphy acknowledged the bright future ahead for The Pas and northern Manitoba, emphasizing the region’s potential for growth and positive change. He reiterated his support for the town’s ongoing development efforts, expressing optimism for the forthcoming opportunities in the region.
