Sabrina Gervais, a mother, healthcare professional, and seasoned flag football player, is aiming to include “Olympian” in her list of achievements. The experienced defensive back is leading Canada’s national women’s team in the 2026 world championship with aspirations for a gold medal and a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where flag football will debut.
Participating in the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship in Germany, Gervais is optimistic about her team’s chances. Canada’s journey includes matches against Panama, Brazil, and Japan. The top two finishers will secure Olympic berths, with the possibility of a third spot if the United States reaches the gold-medal game as the host nation.
Canada’s road to the world championship involved reaching the final of the previous year’s IFAF Americas Continental championship in Panama, where they fell to Mexico due to adverse weather conditions. Despite the setback, Gervais and her team are determined to face Mexico again and hope for a full game this time.
With previous success, including a bronze medal at the 2025 World Games in China, Canada is no stranger to international competition. Gervais emphasizes the importance of teamwork and maintaining a positive mindset to achieve the best results.
In her 24 years of flag football experience, Gervais has balanced her sporting career with motherhood and a full-time healthcare profession. She values rest, proper nutrition, and support from her community to stay in peak physical condition. Additionally, Gervais takes pride in mentoring younger players and acknowledges the pivotal role of head coach Rachel Lessard in Canada’s achievements.
Looking ahead, Gervais remains focused on taking each day as it comes and continues to enjoy playing while inspiring others through her dedication and leadership on and off the field.
