Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory over the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium this past Saturday.
Kahli Johnson found the net in the 15th minute to put the hosts ahead 1-0, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 approximately 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young scored in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized to make it 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton struck again just before the break, securing her second goal of the match, propelling the Wild to victory.
Jorian Baucom also scored for the Wild, who now hold a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, with their 10-game unbeaten streak coming to an end.
Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to 6).
The Wild earned six of the match’s 11 corners, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then sealed the deal with a second goal five minutes into stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-place Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute.
The fifth-place Rise dominated possession with 56%, outshooting the Tides 18-13, with a 6-4 lead in shots on target.
Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
