Prince Edward Island revealed more information on a budget pledge to enhance funding for fertility treatment during a news briefing held on Tuesday. The province disclosed that Islanders will now receive a maximum lifetime benefit of up to $20,000 per family for treatment, without the inclusion of an income test, differing from the previous program which had income restrictions and annual funding limits.
Tracy Malone, a board member of the advocacy group Fertility Matters Canada and a naturopath, highlighted the significance of the funding in enabling patients to access specialized reproductive care off the Island and recover some of the associated costs.
In a previous commitment made in April, the P.E.I. government allocated $700,000 in its budget to enhance fertility support. The latest announcement specified that the $20,000 benefit could cover expenses related to treatments like in-vitro fertilization and intrauterine insemination, encompassing consultation fees and more. However, travel expenses are not part of the grant.
Health Minister Cory Deagle emphasized that the revised funding structure offers families increased flexibility in utilizing the funds for multiple treatment cycles over time. Approximately 340 individuals have already received around $1.5 million in support from the program. The new funding model was developed based on feedback from fertility advocates.
Progressive Conservative backbench MLA Susie Dillon expressed her hope for future expansion of services on the Island, particularly mentioning the potential for a satellite monitoring center. Malone also advocated for the establishment of a modest satellite clinic on the Island to expedite advanced care for couples in need, reducing their time to treatment significantly.
Deagle mentioned that constituents in his district have designed a journal to support individuals undergoing fertility care, which will be distributed to all participants in the fertility program. Interested individuals can apply for funding by completing a form on the P.E.I. government’s website.
