Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a recent government initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs. Under the new scheme, all of the approximately 8,350 fuel stations nationwide are required to promptly notify customers of any changes in petrol and diesel prices. This information will be shared with third-party websites and mobile apps, enabling motorists to easily compare fuel prices across different locations.
The goal is to eventually provide real-time price updates, offering drivers increased opportunities to save money in the long term. Previously, only 65% of UK fuel stations were covered by an interim scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.
The government’s ‘Fuel Finder’ program, now in effect, will enforce strict guidelines on the information that must be disclosed by petrol stations and when it should be made available. Non-compliant operators risk receiving a “compliance notice” or facing fines of up to 1% of their global annual turnover.
This initiative comes in response to concerns that drivers have been overpaying for fuel. Even a small price difference of 5p per litre between stations could save the average driver £2.75 per fill-up. Edmund King, president of the AA motoring group, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers to make informed choices about where to purchase fuel at the best prices.
According to King, similar systems in countries like Austria and France have led to more competitive fuel pricing, enabling drivers to easily locate the most cost-effective options using mobile apps and in-car information screens. Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, expressed optimism that the scheme will foster increased competition among retailers, ultimately benefiting drivers with better value at the pumps.
Currently, the national average fuel prices are 132.1p per litre for unleaded and 141.2p per litre for diesel.
