Britons looking to escape the gloomy winter weather in the UK often choose popular destinations like Bali or Thailand. However, travel experts have highlighted another country that is gaining recognition as a strong contender, offering beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes.
Sri Lanka, though not a hidden gem, has seen a significant rise in popularity recently, with Travel Republic reporting a 72% increase in holiday bookings to the South Asian nation in the past month. Influencers on social media have been sharing their travel experiences in Sri Lanka, with followers expressing awe at its beauty.
Featuring a scenic coastline, lush landscapes, and a variety of wildlife such as elephants and leopards, Sri Lanka is attracting adventurous travelers. The historic Sigiriya fortress, believed to have been built by King Kasyapa, is a prominent landmark in the country. Known as Lion Rock, it gets its name from a large stone lion sculpture at the citadel’s entrance.
While the climb to the top of Sigiriya is challenging, the breathtaking views are worth it. Udawalawe National Park offers a great opportunity for wildlife sightings, from buffalo and mongooses to jackals and deer. Unawatuna Beach is a must-visit spot for those seeking pristine Maldives-style beaches, ideal for swimming and water sports.
Among the numerous temples scattered across Sri Lanka, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy stands out. This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses a sacred relic believed to be Buddha’s tooth, a revered artifact associated with the country’s governance. Despite the tooth being kept in a secure golden casket, visitors can explore the temple complex with its shrines and smaller temples, providing insight into Sri Lankan culture.
A spokesperson from Travel Republic expressed that Sri Lanka is becoming a top destination in Asia, offering stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and abundant wildlife without the crowds seen in other popular places. With temperatures reaching 30°C in December and January, the appeal of Sri Lanka is evident. Travelers are advised to visit the south and west coasts during the winter months for dry weather, as the northern parts experience monsoon season.
The travel expert recommends planning a trip to Sri Lanka in 2026, especially for exploring the southwest coast and cultural triangle from December to March. For the east coast, including Arugam Bay, the ideal time to visit is from April to September for surfing and beach activities.
