Lidl, the budget supermarket chain, is poised to enter the mobile phone market with cost-effective plans to challenge established network providers. To access these deals, customers will be required to have a Lidl Plus account. This move is part of a substantial £600 million investment initiative by Lidl, which not only involves offering mobile services but also includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following the footsteps of other non-traditional players like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to introduce budget-friendly phone packages. While Lidl already provides this service in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are potential plans to expand to the UK, US, France, and Spain as reported by the Financial Times.
Although the initial launch countries are yet to be confirmed, Lidl’s parent company, Schwarz Group, has struck a deal with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). This strategic move allows Lidl to offer mobile plans by utilizing existing infrastructure instead of building its own network.
In addition to its telecom venture, Lidl is set to open more than 50 new stores within the next year, generating 2,000 job opportunities. This expansion forms part of a £600 million investment program, with new locations earmarked in various regions across the UK, such as Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury.
Lidl’s growth strategy also involves targeting new properties across Great Britain, emphasizing its commitment to supporting local communities and job creation. Schwarz Group’s investment in 1GLOBAL further aligns with its digital vision, which includes expanding into tech through Schwarz Digits, a cloud computing and cybersecurity division, and investing in AI startups.
The move into additional markets by Lidl could potentially intensify competition for traditional telecom providers as new entrants focus on competitive pricing and enhanced convenience. Employment minister Kate Dearden praised the investment by Lidl for creating thousands of quality jobs that contribute to improving living standards in communities nationwide.
