Romanian authorities have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with offenses including trafficking minors, money laundering, sex with a minor, and witness tampering. His brother Tristan has also been indicted for complicity. The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship and are former kickboxers, were taken into custody in Miami following a request for extradition from the UK.
Having resided mainly in Romania since 2017, the Tates have been the subject of a criminal inquiry in the country since December 2022, focusing on allegations such as human trafficking. Despite the accusations, they have consistently denied any wrongdoing. Prosecutors in Romania allege that the brothers enticed victims by feigning romantic interest or marriage before coercing them into creating explicit content for a webcam enterprise.
In response to the charges, a Romanian lawyer representing the Tates, Eugen Vidineac, stated that they would thoroughly scrutinize the indictment and contest any deficiencies through legal channels. The accused individuals maintain their innocence in the face of these accusations. The Tate brothers are currently incarcerated in the United States awaiting a decision on their extradition to the UK, where they face rape charges.
The Romanian anti-organized crime unit, DIICOT, which is leading the investigation against the Tates, has not confirmed whether they will pursue extradition from the U.S. The brothers could potentially stand trial in absentia in Romania, but the legal process will not commence immediately. According to Romanian law, the indictment will be examined by a preliminary court chamber to verify its legality, a process that typically extends beyond the stipulated 60-day period.
DIICOT revealed that one of Andrew Tate’s victims was 15 years old when he initiated contact with her in the UK in 2012, subsequently relocating her to Bucharest, Romania, and subjecting her to exploitation through coercion and violence to produce pornographic material for online platforms. The unit asserted that Tristan played a part in the victim’s abuse by using physical force. Prosecutors claimed that the brothers siphoned $1.25 million from the victim’s video chat earnings and attempted to conceal the illicit funds by purchasing luxury vehicles.
Although the Tate brothers had previously faced charges of human trafficking in Romania, a 2024 ruling by the Bucharest court of appeals led to the case being remanded to prosecutors due to the exclusion of certain evidence. Andrew Tate, known for his controversial views on women, had expressed a preference for Romania due to perceived leniency in law enforcement. The brothers have cultivated a substantial following, particularly among young men, by projecting an extravagant, hyper-masculine lifestyle involving fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
