In a recent post on the “therobinwilliams” Instagram account, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their desire for the platform to serve as a secure and trustworthy space where genuine stories, photos, videos, and memories can honor their father’s legacy with authenticity and care. This marked the account’s first post since July 31, 2014.
The Williams siblings aim to share their father’s exceptional talent and humor with the world, showcasing moments that brought joy and laughter to them and his fans. They highlight his remarkable career in film, television, and stage, from his breakthrough in the TV series “Mork & Mindy” to iconic movies like “Good Morning Vietnam,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Jumanji.”
Acknowledged for his acting prowess, Williams earned an Academy Award for best supporting actor in “Good Will Hunting” and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin.” However, AI-generated videos of Williams circulating online, created using OpenAI’s Sora app, have sparked controversy.
OpenAI discontinued Sora in response to backlash from families of public figures like Williams, Michael Jackson, Mister Rogers, and Martin Luther King Jr., whose likenesses were manipulated in videos. Zelda Williams, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, has been vocal in condemning AI recreations of her father, urging fans to refrain from sharing such content.
In an Instagram story, she emphasized the importance of preserving her father’s digital legacy as a means to counter the misuse of AI technology. While some, like actor Matthew Lawrence, have expressed interest in leveraging AI to revive Williams’ voice, the family’s consent remains paramount.
Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has also denounced the unauthorized use of her father’s image in AI applications. The debate over AI replication extends beyond Williams, as seen in the case of late actor Val Kilmer, whose estate permitted his digital likeness to feature in an upcoming film, “As Deep As the Grave.”
