“RCMP Investigate Bold Theft of P.E.I. Community Mailbox”

Prince Edward Island RCMP are currently investigating the theft of a community mailbox in Beach Point. The Kings District RCMP received a report post-midnight on August 5, reporting the removal of the mailbox and its contents from its original location. Two other mailboxes were left untouched at the Cape Bear Road site.

According to Cpl. Gavin Moore, an RCMP media relations officer in P.E.I., the theft impacts approximately 15 households. He highlighted the significance of the mailboxes, noting their durable construction and the considerable effort required to remove them.

Canada Post confirmed its awareness of the incident in an email response to CBC News, mentioning that their security and investigations units have collaborated with the RCMP. The community mailbox was replaced on August 17, and mail delivery is set to resume on August 21. Affected residents could retrieve their mail at the Murray Harbour Post Office in the interim, with new mailbox keys available for collection starting August 20.

Canada Post emphasized its commitment to mail security but refrained from disclosing specific security measures publicly to maintain their effectiveness. The organization declined to provide additional comments while the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Cpl. Moore stated that thefts involving community mailboxes are uncommon and could result in charges such as theft and property damage. He urged anyone with information on the theft to contact Kings District RCMP or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Moore emphasized the importance of even minor details or rumors in aiding investigations and encouraged individuals to come forward with any potentially relevant information.
