Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette expressed concerns on Saturday about the U.S. potentially infringing on Canadian sovereignty during tariff discussions. Fréchette highlighted the American willingness to negotiate on matters impacting Canada’s sovereignty, particularly regarding tariff policies. She commended Prime Minister Mark Carney for halting the talks.
Fréchette revealed that the U.S. proposed discussing Quebec’s French language regulations, including requirements for French language inclusion on consumer products and user manuals. She emphasized the importance of preserving Quebec’s language and culture, stating that these aspects are non-negotiable.
The proposal regarding Quebec’s language laws came as a surprise on the final day of negotiations, Fréchette noted. Despite facing potential tariffs, she affirmed that Quebec will uphold its cultural identity. Fréchette acknowledged the challenging times ahead for Quebec due to the situation.
Quebec Minister of Finance Eric Girard anticipated a significant impact on jobs as a result of the tariffs, although not as severe as the pandemic’s effects. In response to the escalating trade tensions, Quebec’s economy minister, Bernard Drainville, introduced two support programs for businesses in the manufacturing and primary sectors.
One program will assist businesses with annual revenues exceeding $2 million that have been significantly affected by U.S. tariffs exceeding 25%. Eligible companies can apply for loans with a moratorium of up to 24 months. The second program targets businesses earning $1 million to $2 million annually, offering loans of up to $150,000 with a 13-month moratorium. These initiatives supplement the aid expected from the Canadian government.
Fréchette emphasized the need for federal support for businesses and workers impacted by the trade dispute, urging the Canadian government to take action.
