“Quebec Election Campaign Kicks Off for Hotly Contested Race”

The provincial election campaign is set to begin this week, with Thursday, Aug. 27, likely being the official start date. Despite the formal commencement still pending, the five major political parties have been actively engaged in election preparations for some time.

As the election is scheduled for Oct. 5, Quebecers will be electing a new government after Francois Legault’s resignation earlier this year. Christine Fréchette succeeded Legault as premier in April, following her victory in the party’s leadership race. Polls indicate a close race for the premier’s position, with the possibility of a minority government, a scenario not seen since 2012.

This year’s election features 127 ridings, an increase from the previous 125, necessitating 64 seats for a majority. The main party leaders vying for the premiership are Christine Fréchette (CAQ), Ruba Ghazal (QS), Charles Milliard (PLQ), Éric Duhaime (PCQ), and Paul St-Pierre Plamondon (PQ).

Each party faces unique challenges and objectives in the upcoming election. The PQ leads in current polls despite low support for a referendum, aiming to overcome previous electoral setbacks. The Liberals seek a resurgence under new leadership, while the Conservative party hopes for gains, particularly in the Quebec City region. Québec Solidaire faces changes with key figures exiting politics but has shown positive momentum in recent polls.

Top campaign issues include health and social services, the cost of living, housing, and the economy. The PQ’s referendum plans and recent U.S.-Canada trade tensions are expected to feature prominently in the campaign discourse.
