“Peckham’s Youth Empowered Through MyEnds Program”

On a chilly winter evening, the wind howls outside the Damilola Taylor Centre in Peckham, while rain pelts the glass roof, drowning out the sounds of basketball players inside. Despite the harsh weather, a group of teenage boys is engaged in an intense game with youth workers from the Active Communities Network as part of the ‘My Ends’ program.

One of the teenagers, Sammy, aged 14, expresses how the journey to the center has positively impacted him, despite the long commute. The memory of Damilola Taylor’s tragic fate still resonates with the young participants, highlighting the need for safe spaces in the community.

Peckham’s Labour and Co-operative MP, Miatta Fahnbulleh, acknowledges the lack of safe spaces for young people during her election campaign. She emphasizes the importance of providing accessible youth services to ensure the well-being of the community’s youth.

Fahnbulleh, a minister in the Communities department, aims to revitalize social connections disrupted by Austerity policies. Her ambitious vision includes ensuring that every child in Peckham is within a 10-minute walk of a youth service by 2035.

Secretary of State Lisa Nandy recently unveiled the government’s new youth strategy in Peckham. The strategy involves a significant investment of £500 million to enhance youth services nationwide, including the construction and renovation of youth centers and the establishment of career and mental health advice hubs.

The Co-op Party emphasizes the importance of safe communal spaces for young people as part of its Community Britain initiative. Joe Fortune, the General Secretary, stresses the need for quality youth services shaped by and for the youth to promote strong community bonds.

In Peckham, initiatives like MyEnds Southwark by the Active Communities Network play a crucial role in providing a supportive environment for young individuals. Volunteers like Omar Mohamed are dedicated to countering negative influences and guiding youth towards positive growth and purpose.

Through testimonials from participants like Benedict and Sammy, it is evident that these youth programs have a profound impact on their lives, instilling a sense of community, purpose, and resilience. The commitment to expanding access to such programs within close proximity reflects a promising step towards nurturing the well-being of young people in the community.
