Montreal’s Metro system is marking its 60th anniversary this year, and the city’s transit authority is inviting residents to participate in the festivities. The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced a range of activities to commemorate this significant milestone, including a celebration inside a Metro train car in collaboration with Piknic Électronik, a popular event held at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
Further details about the event are anticipated to be revealed at a later date. Additionally, musical performances and events are scheduled to take place at either the Place-des-Arts or Berri-UQAM stations in September. While specific information is still forthcoming, it is expected that some of Montreal’s professional sports teams will also partake in the celebrations in their unique ways. The Montreal Canadiens will display signage at select Metro stations, and the Montreal Alouettes will feature in videos showcasing the Metro network.
To mark the occasion, the Montreal airport will modify its signage to acknowledge the anniversary. The STM is encouraging commuters to share their memorable “Metro moments” by submitting stories, similar to the one depicted in the image below.
The Montreal Metro network was inaugurated on October 14, 1966, during the tenure of former mayor Jean Drapeau. It has expanded to encompass 68 stations, with the most recent additions occurring in Laval in 2007. The next phase of expansion is slated for 2031 with the completion of the Blue line extension.
The Green line is set to exclusively operate the MR-73 trains, introduced in 1976, once the Blue line extension is operational in 2031. This decision is due to the new stations being only compatible with the AZUR trains, making the older cars obsolete by that time.
