Norway’s soccer president, Lise Klaveness, criticized FIFA’s decision to dismiss the senior official who condemned Gianni Infantino for his lack of transparency regarding a proposed World Cup sell-off plan. Klaveness emphasized the importance of resisting detrimental directives within the governing body.
The removal of FIFA’s chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, occurred following his public denouncement of Infantino’s $20 billion private equity initiative, which led to its prompt termination. Klaveness expressed disappointment over Lamour’s abrupt dismissal, labeling it as a form of authoritarian management and praised Lamour as an exceptional football administrator.
As a former Norway international player and an executive committee member at UEFA, Klaveness urged FIFA leadership, particularly targeting secretary general Mattias Grafström, to prioritize the best interests of football and not succumb to unfavorable commands.
Lamour, who had a longstanding professional relationship with Infantino, faced backlash for his criticisms, heightening the crisis surrounding the FIFA president. The controversy stemmed from a secretive proposal to sell future World Cup revenues to investors, sparking discontent among various soccer bodies.
Lamour’s public statement highlighted concerns about staff being misled by Infantino’s lack of transparency, emphasizing the need for better treatment and integrity within FIFA. Klaveness asserted that Lamour’s intervention was pivotal in halting the controversial project and emphasized the importance of revealing the truth to prevent misrepresentation.
Regarding Lamour’s departure, Klaveness suggested it was a forced termination orchestrated by Grafström under pressure from Infantino. FIFA issued a brief acknowledgment of Lamour’s service and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Despite internal support for Infantino expressed during a meeting in Rabat, Morocco, Klaveness criticized the atmosphere of fear and emphasized the need for transparent and ethical leadership within FIFA. Infantino’s potential reelection now faces uncertainty following the fallout from the controversial “FIFA Forward Enterprise” proposal, with the deadline for challengers to enter the race approaching in November.
