“Manitoba RCMP Urges Off-Road Safety After Fatal ATV Incidents”

Manitoba RCMP issued a safety reminder concerning the operation of off-road vehicles following two separate incidents resulting in one fatality and one injury on Wednesday. The initial occurrence in Little Saskatchewan First Nation involved a 20-year-old woman who tragically fell from an all-terrain vehicle driven by a 31-year-old man, leading to her death due to the impact with the gravel road. Notably, the woman was not wearing a helmet at the time. Subsequently, the driver was apprehended and charged with offenses including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and impaired driving causing death.

In a separate incident later that evening in Brochet, Man., Thompson rural RCMP responded to a crash involving two juveniles and an ATV. Reports indicated that a 14-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and was receiving treatment at a nursing station, while a 13-year-old boy from South Indian Lake allegedly collided with the former while driving an ATV without headlights on the street. The injured teenager was later transferred to a Winnipeg hospital for further medical care and has since been discharged, with authorities continuing their investigation into the matter.

The Manitoba RCMP highlighted the unfortunate toll of off-road vehicle accidents this year, with six fatalities reported so far. Emphasizing the importance of responsible driving practices, they urged the public to refrain from operating any vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Moreover, individuals were reminded to wear helmets securely fastened and, if available, seatbelts when using off-road vehicles. The police further advised against carrying passengers unless the vehicle is explicitly designed for two individuals and cautioned against using such vehicles on roadways, except for lawful crossing by licensed drivers. Additionally, individuals under 14 years of age were reminded that supervision by an adult is mandatory when operating off-road vehicles.
