“Lost Tortoise Molly’s Wild Adventure in Manitoba”

In a surprising discovery, Molly, an African spurred tortoise native to the Sahara desert, was found wandering around Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, far from her usual habitat. The staff at the marsh, led by Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter, rescued the 36-kilogram tortoise after receiving reports of unusual tortoise sightings in the area.

Initially, the staff thought the sightings were of a common snapping turtle, but a report on the iNaturalist app confirmed the presence of the tortoise. Subsequently, a search was launched, and Molly was quickly located in the marsh.

The staff, taken aback by the unexpected visitor, provided care for Molly by feeding her cucumbers and flower petals, giving her guided tours, and ensuring her well-being until her owners were found. Molly’s family, who had raised her for 15 years since she was a baby, reclaimed her from the marsh on July 22.

It was speculated that Molly escaped through a gap in her family’s backyard fence during renovations. Despite efforts to explain how she traveled 20 kilometers to the marsh, the exact journey remains a mystery. One theory suggests that a well-meaning person might have relocated her to the wetland, unaware of the risks to a tortoise in such an environment.

Reflecting on Molly’s adventure, Malchuk highlighted the tortoise’s resilience and determination, leaving the exact details of her journey shrouded in mystery.
