Formula 1 legend Lewis Hamilton is advocating for Africa to gain independence from the control of various nations like Britain, France, Spain, and others to reclaim its resources. Hamilton, a seasoned racer, is also eager to witness the sport’s return to the continent before he retires.
During discussions preceding the Australian Grand Prix as the 2026 season kicks off in Melbourne, Hamilton responded to a South African journalist’s inquiry about the possibility of hosting a race in Africa.
Expressing his aspirations, the seven-time world champion highlighted his desire to see Africa regain its autonomy. He voiced concerns about the ongoing exploitation of the continent by external powers, emphasizing the need for unity among African nations to reclaim their sovereignty.
Hamilton emphasized the significance of Africa’s potential, stating that it possesses the resources to become a leading global power. He stressed the urgency for Africa to break free from external control for its future prosperity.
The racing icon is enthusiastic about bringing Formula 1 back to Africa, noting that the continent has not hosted a Grand Prix since 1993 when the South African Grand Prix was held at Kyalami.
Hamilton is actively advocating for Africa to be included in Formula 1’s calendar before he retires. He disclosed that he is engaging with Formula 1’s decision-makers to ensure that Africa is considered as a race host location.
Acknowledging his African heritage with roots in countries like Togo and Benin, Hamilton expressed pride in his connections to the continent. He mentioned his visits to Benin, Senegal, and Nigeria, underscoring his strong attachment to Africa.
