“Inside China’s ‘Fat Prison’: Woman’s 28-Day Weight Loss Ordeal”

A woman has detailed her experience inside a Chinese ‘fat prison’ where she underwent a 28-day program under strict regulations. TL Huang, an Australian living in China, was confined in the weight loss facility in Guangzhou. The institution strictly prohibited unhealthy foods like instant noodles and enforced harsh living conditions within fenced dormitories. Security personnel monitored all entry and exit points continuously, restricting any form of departure.

According to Huang, the facility imposed stringent rules, including mandatory stay within the premises, structured daily routines, and constant supervision. She mentioned in a social media video that the facility’s gates remained closed at all times, preventing any unauthorized exits.

Huang’s decision to participate in the camp, categorized as one of China’s state-endorsed ‘fat prisons,’ stemmed from her mother’s suggestion after she gained weight from consuming takeout meals. The program controlled every aspect of her life, including regular weigh-ins, intense four-hour exercise sessions, and strict meal plans featuring items like prawns with vegetables, chilli steamed fish, and braised chicken.

During her third week in the facility, Huang fell ill with the flu and a high fever, resulting in hospitalization. She expressed her struggles with sickness and lack of energy due to the demanding exercise regimen. In China, more than half of the adult population is considered overweight or obese, with projections indicating a potential increase to two-thirds by 2030. These ‘fat prisons’ aim to address the obesity issue by offering structured weight loss programs at a cost.

Huang disclosed that she paid $600 for her stay, covering accommodation, meals, and exercise sessions. Despite the challenging experience, she asserted that she had no regrets, emphasizing the importance of establishing healthier habits and routines. Through documented videos, she shared her journey of monitoring calorie intake and adapting to portion-controlled meals, ultimately shedding 6kg in four weeks.

Reflecting on her time in the camp, Huang acknowledged the intensity of the program but highlighted the sense of achievement and personal growth she experienced. She encouraged individuals considering such programs to view them as a positive step towards a healthier lifestyle, emphasizing the significance of building sustainable habits and knowledge for long-term well-being.
