Essex Mayor Sherry Bondy is proposing a temporary halt to the establishment of AI data centers in the town. Bondy has introduced a motion to be considered at the upcoming September 8 town council meeting, seeking to implement an interim control by-law. This by-law, as per the provincial Planning Act, allows municipalities to pause specific types of development in designated areas for up to a year to assess their land use planning policies, with the option to extend it for another year.
Bondy emphasized the importance of safeguarding the town and its environment while the county conducts a thorough study on the matter. She believes that the motion will offer assurance to the public, alleviating concerns until more information is available. This move by Bondy comes in the wake of Essex County Council’s decision to gather preliminary information on data center planning and explore the possibility of a more comprehensive study, including the associated costs.
The county council is set to vote on proceeding with the study on September 2, according to Bondy. Meanwhile, the province has unveiled a new framework for AI data centers, focusing on sustainable practices such as closed-loop water systems and self-sufficient power generation. However, Green Party leader Mike Schreiner criticized the lack of robust regulations in the framework.
Premier Doug Ford defended data centers, urging critics to educate themselves about their benefits. Bondy stressed the need for Essex to conduct thorough research and make informed decisions regarding the potential establishment of data centers in the town. She highlighted the importance of proactive measures to protect the environment and local communities in case a data center is mandated by the province.
Local resident Tyler Reh has initiated a petition in support of Bondy’s motion, aiming to ensure that any future data centers in the area do not negatively impact the environment or existing industries. Bondy and residents like Reh are keen on preemptively addressing the potential implications of data center development to avoid long-term consequences similar to those experienced with previous projects like wind turbines in the region.
