“Canada’s Army Transforms with New Purpose-Based Divisions”

Canada’s Army has recently undergone a significant structural transformation, moving away from geographic divisions to purpose-based divisions. The Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Edmonton marked this shift by establishing the 1st Canadian Division, which will be the primary force for large-scale combat deployments and crisis responses. Headquartered in Edmonton, this “manoeuvre division” will consolidate various capabilities such as tanks, artillery, infantry, paratroopers, and engineers to enhance readiness for swift deployments and sustained operations.

The change aims to enhance the army’s agility, lethality, and relevance in defending Canada, according to Maj.-Gen. Wade Rutland, the commander of the 1st Canadian Division. Rutland emphasized the evolving threat landscape, highlighting the resurgence of large-scale combat scenarios akin to those seen in Ukraine. The establishment of a war-fighting division is part of a broader modernization initiative led by Lt.-Gen. Michael Wright, outlined in the 2025 document “Inflection Point.”

In addition to the manoeuvre division, the army is establishing a support division in Kingston, Ontario, and a “defence of Canada” division in Montreal, known as the 2nd Canadian Division, primarily focused on national emergencies and domestic defense. The historic 3rd Canadian Division, with roots dating back to the First World War and participation in the D-Day landing at Juno Beach, is transitioning to the supplementary Order of Battle. This reorganization involves integrating the 3rd Division’s personnel into the 1st and 2nd Divisions and the support division.

The 1st Canadian Division, known for its contributions such as the capture of Vimy Ridge, will oversee three Canadian Mechanized Brigade Groups located in Edmonton, Petawawa, and CFB Valcartier. It will also manage the 3rd Light Infantry Regiment, the Canadian Artillery Brigade, 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade, and 1 Canadian Sustainment Brigade. Rutland emphasized the historical significance of the 1st Division, highlighting its pivotal role in major combat operations during the Second World War.
