“Edmonton Oilers Face Backlash Over Signing Acquitted Player”

The Edmonton Oilers’ choice to sign a hockey player acquitted of sexual assault last year has led to widespread disappointment and demands for the team to improve its decisions. Criticism began pouring in on Wednesday following the announcement of Alex Formenton’s one-year contract worth $850,000 US. Formenton was among five players from Canada’s 2018 world junior team accused of sexual assault after an incident with a woman following a Hockey Canada gala in London, Ont.

According to Daily Hive sports journalist Preston Hodgkinson, the initial fan reaction on social media has been predominantly negative compared to previous controversial signings within the NHL. Comments on an Oilers Instagram post about the signing displayed expressions of embarrassment, disgust, and disappointment, with many fans stating they would not support the team with Formenton on the roster.

One comment from @ireland1102 emphasized the need for the Oilers to better consider their female fanbase and the message being sent to women and girls supporting the team. Additionally, high-profile fan Mary Loewen, known as “Mama Stanley,” shared similar sentiments on social media, stating her inability to support the team as long as Formenton is part of it due to her personal experience as a sexual assault survivor.

Although acquitted in July 2025 along with four other players, Formenton and the others were found to have breached the Hockey Canada code of conduct by an independent appeal board, resulting in continued suspensions for four players. Formenton expressed gratitude for joining the Oilers after facing challenges along the way.

Despite the backlash, some individuals have voiced support for giving Formenton a second chance post-acquittal. However, concerns have been raised by survivors of sexual assault, like Loewen, who perceive the signing as insensitive. The Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE) acknowledged the impact the announcement may have on survivors and offered support to those affected by the news.
