Unhoused Resident in Richmond Highlights Importance of Self-Worth in Overcoming Addiction
Cam Callihoo, a resident experiencing homelessness in Richmond, B.C., emphasized the significance of self-worth in his battle against addiction. According to Callihoo, feeling deserving of life is crucial to breaking free from addiction, and this sense of worthiness comes from being treated as a human being by others.
During a recent listening circle with the city’s political candidates, members of the local unhoused community shared their perspectives on pressing issues like homelessness, addiction, and mental health, which have gained significant attention as the municipal elections in October approach.
Recent months have seen increased focus on encampments and the controversial Aster Place homeless transitional house. The latest homeless count revealed that Richmond’s unhoused population has doubled since 2020, reaching an estimated 175 individuals due to ongoing affordability challenges.
At a gathering facilitated by the social advocacy group 360 Community called “Stronger Together,” unhoused individuals had the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions. They proposed innovative ideas such as repurposing shipping containers on vacant Crown land for housing and requested essential support services like health packages, counseling, and medical assistance.
Mehdi Gharehdaghi, another unhoused resident, advocated for housing solutions tailored to seniors, given the increasing number of elderly individuals among the unhoused population in the city. He issued a challenge to the mayor and panel members to spend 24 hours experiencing homelessness, which was accepted by council candidate Tamás Revóczi.
Following the listening circle, some unhoused residents expressed feeling heard and appreciated the empathy shown by political candidates. Aaron King, a former unhoused individual, emphasized the importance of hope and shared his positive outlook on the event.
While some candidates were moved by the stories shared, acknowledging the need for solutions through active listening, there remains skepticism among some unhoused residents about the potential for real change. As the upcoming elections draw closer, the community will be closely monitoring the responses and actions of candidates regarding homelessness and related issues.
