“Wildfire Evacuees Brace for Changes Upon Returning Home”

As wildfire evacuees from northwestern Ontario gear up to return home, caution is advised by local leaders regarding potential significant changes in their communities following an extended absence. Whitesand First Nation and Armstrong have housed around 624 evacuees in Thunder Bay since mid-July, with expectations of the Ministry of Natural Resources lifting evacuation orders in the near future. Chief Lawrence Wanakamik stressed the importance of ensuring the community’s readiness before residents embark on their journey back.

The province is exercising prudence in altering evacuation orders, with over 2,800 evacuees from various northwestern Ontario communities during the peak of the summer’s wildfire activity. Presently, around 700 individuals remain displaced, as reported by Ontario’s Ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response (MEPR). Decisions on community repatriation are made in consultation with First Nation leadership and the Ministry of Natural Resources to safeguard against continued fire threats.

Whitesand has yet to request ministry assistance for member repatriation, indicating ongoing assessment and precautionary measures. The region’s communication services remain disrupted, prompting plans to deploy Starlink equipment for emergency internet access. Preparations are underway for addressing potential damages, waste disposal, and mental health support upon residents’ return. The community is bracing for the emotional impact of altered landscapes and disrupted routines following the wildfires.

Despite the challenges faced, solidarity and support efforts continue, exemplified by fundraising initiatives in various communities to aid Whitesand and Armstrong evacuees. Acknowledging the generous contributions and community spirit, the affected regions anticipate a swift transition back to normalcy as they await official clearance to return.
