“Solvet’s Equine Ivermectin Nabs FDA Emergency Use for Screwworm”

A Calgary-based company, Solvet, has received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its equine ivermectin product in the United States to combat screwworm. Solvet’s CEO, Lionel Gibbs, highlighted the unique qualities of their aqueous-based liquid solution, emphasizing its concentrated nature and ease of administration compared to traditional paste forms.

Established in 2009 by two former University of Calgary professors, Solvet has grown into one of Canada’s leading veterinary pharmaceutical companies. Ivermectin, a well-known anti-parasitic drug, is effective against a variety of parasites, including the screwworm fly native to parts of North America.

Female screwworm flies lay eggs in open wounds of animals like horses and cattle, leading to severe tissue damage and potential fatality. The successful eradication of screwworm from North America was achieved through the sterile insect technique, where sterilized male flies were released into the environment to disrupt the fly’s reproductive cycle.

However, with the recent resurgence of screwworm in North America, including in Texas, measures are being taken to address the threat. Solvet’s ivermectin liquid has been specifically authorized for short-term prevention of screwworm in horses, aiming to protect animals from potential harm caused by the parasite.

Veterinarians like John Gilleard from the University of Calgary see the authorization as a necessary step to safeguard animals at risk in affected areas like Texas. While the product serves to protect animal welfare during outbreaks, careful use is essential to prevent resistance in parasites and minimize environmental impacts.

Though Canada currently faces a low risk of screwworm infestations due to its climate, proactive monitoring and collaboration with U.S. animal health authorities remain crucial. Solvet views this opportunity as a platform to expand its reach and contribute to Alberta’s economy through innovative solutions in animal healthcare.

In conclusion, Solvet’s emergency use authorization for its ivermectin liquid in the U.S. represents a significant step in combatting screwworm infestations, safeguarding animal welfare, and opening doors for further advancements in veterinary pharmaceuticals.
