Palestine Action Hunger Strikers End Protest after UK Defense Contract Loss

Three individuals who were part of the Palestine Action group have decided to end their 73-day hunger strike, stating that one of their main demands has been met. Kamran Ahmed, Heba Muraisi, and Lewie Chiaramello made the announcement today following the news that defense contractor Elbit Systems UK lost a significant government contract worth £2 billion to train 60,000 British troops annually.

Heba Muraisi, aged 31, had been on a hunger strike for 73 days and is currently held at HMP New Hall, far from her loved ones. Her health has deteriorated rapidly, prompting discussions among Members of Parliament about relocating her to HMP Bronzefield for closer proximity to her family.

Kamran Ahmed, after 66 days without food, was hospitalized multiple times and diagnosed with bradycardia. His sister criticized the government, especially the Labour party, urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a former human rights lawyer, to feel ashamed.

Lewie Chiaramello, who has type 1 diabetes, was alternating days of refusing food as part of his hunger strike.

Reports from MP Zarah Sultana revealed that Teuta Hoxha, who ended her 58-day hunger strike, is now suffering from re-feeding syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by prolonged fasting. Zarah Sultana expressed concerns about Teuta Hoxha’s health, stating that she has also been hospitalized and is at imminent risk of complications related to re-feeding syndrome.

Elbit Systems UK, a subsidiary of Israel’s leading arms manufacturer, has faced ongoing protests from activists for their involvement in supplying weapons used against Palestinians in Gaza. The company lost the bidding for the £2 billion government contract to prepare soldiers for combat to a consortium led by Raytheon UK, a subsidiary of a US defense corporation, as reported by The Times. The decision was made in favor of Raytheon, with no further explanation provided.
