Parks Canada has shut down a portion of the Ä’äy Chù Valley within Kluane National Park and Reserve near Haines Junction, Yukon, following an incident where a wolf attacked a visitor, resulting in minor injuries. This closure affects various popular hiking trails in the park’s northern area, such as Bullion Plateau, Sheep Creek, Shepherd’s Knoll, Ä’äy Chù East, and Ä’äy Chù West.
Reports from park staff indicated that a young lone wolf was displaying bold behavior, which included trailing individuals and interacting with personal belongings. Parks Canada, in a bulletin released on Friday, highlighted these concerning behaviors. Resource conservation personnel are currently evaluating the situation as of Sunday.
Although rare, human-wolf conflicts are not common, stated the federal agency. Visitors are encouraged to contact the Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre, situated within the Da Kų Cultural Centre, at 867-634-5134 to report any wildlife sightings.
