“Winamp Revamps: Partners with Deezer for New Streaming Platform”

A popular Windows music player, Winamp, is undergoing a transformation to compete in the streaming industry. Known for its impact in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Winamp has partnered with Deezer, an independent music streaming platform. This collaboration will enable Winamp to introduce its own subscription model using Deezer’s technology and music library.

The new platform, set for release in early 2027, will offer users access to music from the streaming library, as well as the ability to play local files and internet radio stations. Users can also personalize their interface using “skins,” a feature beloved from the original player.

While Winamp had faded into the background with the rise of streaming services, the desktop version still boasts over 40 million active users. Originally launched in 1997 by Nullsoft in Arizona, Winamp quickly became a popular choice for storing and playing digital music files, amassing 60 million users by 2001.

Acknowledged for its slogan “Winamp, it really whips the llama’s ass,” Winamp set itself apart with its speed, efficiency, and style, outperforming competitors in the market. The company’s CEO, Alexandre Saboundjian, expressed excitement about challenging the listening experience once again with the upcoming changes.

Despite previous attempts to enter the streaming arena, Winamp faced setbacks. AOL’s acquisition of Nullsoft in 1999 for an estimated $80-100 million marked a turning point. Management issues and clashes between AOL and Nullsoft leadership hindered Winamp’s progress, allowing competitors like Apple’s iPod to gain traction.

For many music enthusiasts, Winamp’s customizable skins symbolize a period of creativity. An online “skin museum” preserves the various layouts designed by fans for earlier versions of the player. Initially slated for shutdown in 2013 by AOL, Winamp was saved by the acquisition of Radionomy, later rebranded as Llama Group and then Winamp Group.

After exploring music NFTs, Winamp made comeback efforts in 2023 and 2024 with initiatives for artists and fans to engage, followed by a new mobile app launch on Android and iOS. The specifics of pricing for the forthcoming streaming service remain undisclosed. Despite some concerns among fans about the introduction of a subscription model, the new platform will offer a premium subscription option alongside the desktop player.
