The Vancouver Rise have strengthened their squad with the addition of two new defenders. The Northern Super League team signed Chantelle Swaby and Kaela Hansen in preparation for an upcoming crucial match against the Halifax Tides this weekend.
Chantelle Swaby, who previously played for Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, brings valuable experience to Vancouver. Head coach Anja Heiner-Moller praised Swaby’s physique and confidence on the field, emphasizing her positive impact on the team’s performance. On the other hand, Kaela Hansen, who joins from NSL side AFC Toronto, is commended for her eagerness to contribute and align with the team’s style of play as a center-back.
Swaby, aged 28, has competed in various leagues globally, including the National Women’s Soccer League, the Scottish Women’s Premier League, and France’s top division. Her seasoned presence and ability to remain composed during intense game situations make her a crucial asset to the Rise.
For Hansen, 26, joining the Vancouver Rise marks a return to her hometown of Burnaby, B.C. She expressed enthusiasm about playing in front of a local audience and the joy of being closer to her family once again.
These signings come after Vancouver bid farewell to Mariah Lee, who retired last month to pursue a career in law, prompting the team to bolster its defensive options. Additionally, goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan was loaned to the Halifax Tides for the remainder of the season.
As the Vancouver Rise (5-9-1) aim to secure a playoff spot in the current season, they are closely trailing the Halifax Tides (6-6-3) by five points. Forward Jessica De Fillippo emphasized the team’s determination to return to the playoffs and showcase their competitive spirit to fans and the league, underlining the significance of the upcoming matches in their postseason aspirations.
