All UK travelers have been restricted from visiting a popular Caribbean island following a crucial advisory issued by the Foreign Office.
The Foreign Office has cautioned against non-essential travel to Cuba due to widespread power outages and fuel shortages causing significant disruptions to the island’s operations. Consequently, flights have been heavily impacted, leading to numerous cancellations as Cuba grapples with ensuring reliable transportation services.
Cuba, known for its tropical climate and sandy beaches, has traditionally attracted British tourists seeking a sunny escape, especially during the winter season. However, the ongoing fuel crisis on the island has effectively barred UK travelers from accessing Cuba.
In a statement released on February 11th, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office highlighted the severe and deteriorating disruptions to essential infrastructure in Cuba, including prolonged nationwide power failures and fuel scarcities. These conditions significantly impede visitors’ ability to access dependable transportation, medical assistance, communication services, and basic amenities.
The FCDO noted that Cuban authorities have implemented fuel rationing, reduced public services, and implemented temporary adjustments to healthcare, education, transportation, and tourism operations to conserve limited energy supplies.
The shortage of aviation fuel has also disrupted flight schedules, prompting some airlines to reconsider routes or temporarily halt services, potentially stranding visitors in the country.
For individuals currently in Cuba, the FCDO advised a careful assessment of the necessity of their presence on the island. They recommended taking precautionary measures such as conserving fuel, water, food, and mobile phone charge, and being prepared for significant disruptions. Travelers were also urged to liaise with their airline and tour operator for further guidance.
On Monday, Air Canada announced the suspension of all flights to Cuba to facilitate the evacuation of approximately 3,000 vacationers from the island. Similarly, other Canadian airlines, including Air Transat and Westjet, confirmed the suspension of their Cuba-bound flights.
While there are no direct flights between the UK and Cuba, the prohibition will impact several specialized tour operators offering the destination through airlines routing via intermediary countries. Companies like Trailfinders, Simply Cuba, Love Cuba, Cox & Kings, Exodus, and Intrepid Travel are among those affected.
This travel disruption follows the seizure of Venezuelan oil tankers by the administration of former President Donald Trump. Cuba heavily relies on Venezuela for a significant portion of its fuel supply, which has been limited since December due to US sanctions.
As per a Notice to Aviation (NOTAM), commercial aviation fuel will not be available at Cuban airports until at least March 11, 2026. The island has also grappled with power outages due to fuel and electricity shortages.
