Iran’s envoy to the United Kingdom has been called to the British Foreign Office in response to the violent suppression of protests across Iran. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed concerns over the severe crackdown by the regime, with reports suggesting a high number of casualties. Due to the internet blackout in Iran, Cooper feared that the actual extent of the violence might be greater than reported.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump encouraged Iranian demonstrators to continue their protests, urging them to take control of their institutions. Trump stated that he had halted all meetings with Iranian officials until the brutal treatment of protesters ceased.
In a parliamentary update, Cooper disclosed that the Iranian ambassador to the UK, Seyed Ali Mousavi, had been summoned by the Foreign Office to address the situation. She emphasized the UK’s condemnation of the killings and violence taking place in Iran.
Cooper further announced plans for imposing additional sanctions on Iran, targeting key sectors such as finance, energy, transport, and software. She dismissed Iran’s claims of foreign interference inciting the protests as falsehoods and propaganda intended to deflect from the regime’s atrocities against peaceful demonstrators.
The Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of supporting the grassroots movement in Iran and not allowing the regime to manipulate the narrative to suit its agenda. Cooper affirmed the UK’s commitment to exposing the regime’s actions and safeguarding national interests in the face of ongoing developments in Iran.
