Keir Starmer has responded to Donald Trump’s recent controversial proposal regarding Greenland by asserting the UK’s position on the matter.
President Trump threatened to impose 10% tariffs on eight countries, including the UK, if they continued opposing his attempts to acquire Greenland. He further stated that the tariffs would escalate to 25% if his Greenland acquisition plans were not fulfilled by June.
In a firm statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and its future should be determined by the Greenlanders and the Danes. He highlighted the importance of Arctic Security within NATO and stressed that allies should collaborate to address security challenges in the region.
Trump criticized European countries for their interests in Greenland, claiming that only the United States, under his leadership, could effectively manage the situation. This led to concerns and increased military activities in Greenland by various nations, including the UK.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for Denmark’s sovereignty and independence, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and security in the Arctic region.
In response to Trump’s tariff threats, UK politicians, including Lib Dem leader Ed Davey and MP Kemi Badenoch, criticized the proposed tariffs as detrimental to both the UK and US economies. Nigel Farage also disagreed with the tariffs, suggesting a reconsideration of the situation in Diego Garcia if concerns about Greenland’s vulnerability existed.
